Peer Support Group Project

Peer Support Group Project

In conjunction with the Self Help Group project, Respond ReNUH is running a Peer Support Group project for sufferers of HIV/AIDS. The regional prevalence of AIDS is believed to be about 12% but in some areas, particularly the slum areas, it can reach up to 40%.

In the Peer Support Group project we form groups of 3 to 5 members, who are members of the Self Help Groups and who are sufferers of HIV/AIDS. These groups meet twice a week and discuss any problems the members might be having. They then receive advice and support from other group members who understand their situation and who might have experienced similar problems in the past.

The groups also ensure that each member is adhering to their treatment. This is very important as if the medication is not taken everyday then the virus can develop a resistance to the treatment.

The groups also work to reduce isolation of people with HIV/AIDS within the community. This is very prevalent in some areas as the hatred for the disease is sometimes taken out on those who suffer from it. Through their membership of the larger Self Help Groups as well as the support groups the women have the opportunity to develop a social network and reenter the community.
